Unable to pretend to be the perfect daughter, marry the perfect Southern gentleman, and have perfect babies like her overprotective father expects her to, Ashton Winslow and her best friend, LuLuBelle set out on a vacation to change all that.

Tired of being told she's perfect and pretending to be someone she isn't, Ashton sets out on a two week journey to reinvent herself. With no one watching her every move, or so she thinks, Ashton finds the one person who finally sees her for the woman she wants to be.

Dane Woods has just come home from fighting overseas after losing his best friend. Everyone, including himself expected him to reenlist for another tour, but he couldn't break a promise he'd made to his dying friend. The last thing Dane has on his mind while tailing a Southern Princess like Ashton Winslow is falling in love. She was supposed to be two week job, but it turns into so much more.

Will Dane risk everything to be with Ashton or will his lies and betrayal destroy her love for him?

A Long Goodbye Southern Comfort Book 1 edition by Kelly Mooney Literature Fiction eBooks

Sweet albeit slightly predictable. Ashton Grace Winslow wants a fun road trip with her BBF LuLu to get away from her controlling politician father. Her father hires ex-soldier, now PI, Dane Woods to follow her. They find love on the road while thinking they are withholding their true identities from each other. The first half of the book details their trip and how they fall in love. The second half deals with the events once back home and the obstacles preventing them from being together.

Dane is honorable, trying to do what’s best by everyone he cares about. Grace is a little naïve. (A vacation fling that won’t tell you his real name or give you his phone number so screamed married man or total player or worst case--criminal. Grace was incredibility lucky she’s a book character. In real life it wouldn’t have worked out the way it did.) Still it’s a cute, sweet story—one you root for the pair to make it work. There’s steam between them in most love scenes, others are brushed over. There’s enough drama to the story to keep it interesting but nothing ridiculous or over the top.

Grammatically the text could benefit from a good proofreading. Some punctuation issues as well as capitalization confusion (example: Civil War was not capitalized even though it was referring to the American Civil War; Army brothers was capitalized even though army is simply used as an adjective not referring to a specific army in that sentence.) At one point their suggested trip from Nashville to Miami is referenced as taking 9 hours??? The distance between those two cities is more than that.

HEA. No cliffhanger. Very complete epilogue. Alternating 1st person POV between Dane and Grace.

A Long Goodbye Southern Comfort Book 1 edition by Kelly Mooney Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was looking for a cheesy read one night so I picked up A Long Goodbye. I didn't think it would be anything that would really draw me in, but I was wrong. I enjoyed this story so much more than I thought I would.

Ashton has a very overprotective dad who tries to control her entire life. He has everything planned out for her. Who she is going to marry, what she will do (stay home and take care of the kids of course) and everything. Only problem? Ashton doesn't want any of that. She doesn't want to marry the guy her dad keeps trying to push on her as he is a terrible person. She wants to work, she wants to do things, she wants to be herself.

Ashton is in her twenties and so old enough to make her own decisions, but for some reason still lets her dad control her life. She wants to take a two week trip with her best friend, and she first asks her dad for permission That whole things is just like wait what? If he said no you really wouldn't go? You are an adult! You can do what you want! I didn't quite understand why she never stood up for herself with him even after she explained it, but oh well. They are going on their trip and she is going to have an amazing time.

Since her dad is way overprotective he hires Dane to follow her. He is supposed to be sneaky about it, she must never know her dad hired a guard for her while she travels. Only problem? Dane finds himself drawn to Ashton. He likes her from the start and he cannot sit back and watch as other guys hit on her.

Ashton is drawn to Dane as well, though she doesn't know who he really is. They have their two weeks and they both fall for the other, but what happens when the get back to the real world? That to me was the best part of the book. It was not rushed, it was not magically everything is fixed in two pages, the author took the time to really make the story work. Ashton has some growing up to do, she needs to learn to stand up for herself and what she wants, and Dane has some issues of his own keeping him from doing whatever he wants. I must say Ashton still makes some stupid decisions, decisions that don't make much sense, but at least she starts to grow and become a stronger person. I really liked the will they be able to figure this all out and live happily ever after that you get in the last part of the book. A surprisingly good read.

In book one of The Southern Comfort Book Series, we meet Dane Woods, Ashton Winslow, and Lulu (Ashton's best friend). Three divergent personalities thrown together for a once in a lifetime journey.

Determined to have an epic weekend before she says yes to marrying the man her fathers has chosen for her, Ashton and Lulu head to Nashville for a little bit of fun. Unbeknownst to the two, Dane has been hired to ensure their safety by Ashton's father, and is hot on their heels.

Dane's connection to the Winslow family is complex and this part of the book unfolds beautifully. While I found the book to have a great beginning and end, the middle did not meet it's potential. Dane and Ashton forge a connection, based upon Danes desires to help her create the memories she wants to have, for when she is bound to a husband in a loveless marriage. These scenes are loaded with tenderness and warmth - utterly charming. When the trio leave Nashville for Florida, the tenderness evaporates and lust takes over. Ms Mooney does a great job in bringing it back at the end of the book.

I would really give this book 3.5 stars if I could. I liked it, I almost really liked it. Another reviewer mentioned the need for another pass by an editor or proofreader, and while that may be, I would give this book a solid 4 if the descriptive narrative and dialog that takes place on a dusty road outside Nashville could have filled more pages of the book.
